Innovate UK funding
We’re excited to announce that we’ve been awarded £210k in grant funding via a highly competitive competition run by Innovate UK.
Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, has invested up to £25 million in the most game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas. The Research and Development projects Innovate UK fund are always ambitious, pioneering, and promise to make a significant and lasting impact.
We are pleased to be counted among these. Innovate UK’s Smart Grant will accelerate the development of Rewire’s AI-based system for detecting online abuse. This grant will help us change how platforms moderate online content, and fulfil our mission to build an open and accessible internet where people are safe from harm.

Rewire’s approach to content moderation is grounded in the most cutting-edge research. Our AI systems are human-led, combining machine learning with human expertise. This means our analysts work together with the AI to test and refine its capabilities. Our research has shown just how successful this interface can be in detecting toxic content, providing accurate and reliable information about large
volumes of content, in real time.

Significant, lasting impact.
Innovate UK’s Smart Grants are intended to support R&D projects which align closely with the UK Government’s priorities. We’re championing their aim of keeping citizens safer online, as outlined in the ‘Online Safety Bill’. This is a growing priority for both policymakers and corporations, as shown by the new regulatory duties given to Ofcom for online harms; the creation of the multi-million pound Centre of Excellence, REPHRAIN, for research into online harms; and the recent joint statement from the G7 regarding online safety and the role of technology.
With Innovate UK’s support, we’ll be working with organisations who are committed to putting online safety first, showing the impact our AI-powered systems can have to protect online spaces.
